What is Thematic Interpretation?

Thematic interpretation is a combination of different scripts revolving around a central theme. Now it is important that your script ratio be 2:1, either it's 2 dramatic pieces and 1 humorous piece OR 2 humorous pieces and 1 dramatic piece. The best thing about thematic interpretation, though, is the magical binder. In TI, you get to have your own personal prop (unlike HI, DI, and OI), a small black binder. With this, you can have your binder act as nearly anything!

Themes

The theme should be evident and obvious throughout all the scripts. Your theme could be abstract such as emotions (anger, love, etc.) or a physical object (shoes, airplanes, etc.). Some of the most clever themes are phrases ("Be Careful What You Wish For") or a clever adjective ("Sold"). The more witty your theme is, the more awesome your speech is going to be!

Some Examples Are:
  • Theme: Gender Roles (Scripts: Mulan, Cinderella, Kitchen God’s Wife)
  • Theme: Growing Up (Scripts: Kick Me: Adventures in Adolescence, Finding Ryan, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother)
  • Theme: Friendship (Scripts: Front Porch Chronicles, Mr. Marmalade, Charlotte’s Web)

Binder Tech

One of the main aspects of TI is the usage of the binder. Since this event is all about style and personalizing your speech, you should try to be really creative with your binder. Use it to make sound effects (like shooting a gun) or props (like typing on a computer). Also, REMEMBER THE BINDER IS YOUR BEST FRIEND! Please treat it nicely! :)

What Should Be in Your Binder?

Well, here's what you'll need:
  • 7 1/8 in X 8 3/4 in small binder (preferred with no shiny cover on the outside)
  • about 20 clear 8 1/2 in X 5 3/4 in page covers with black construction paper in the covers
  • YOUR SCRIPT THAT'S NEATLY TYPED AND CUT UP!!!
